Ecodesign news: agreement reached in trilogue

Provisional agreement on the Ecodesign Regulation: rules against obsolescence, the Digital Product Passport and a ban on destroying unsold textiles.

Fibres, yarn cones, fabrics, offcuts and recycled fibres arranged in a ring: the circular life cycle of textiles

Updates on the Ecodesign Regulation: on 4 December an important step forward was taken in environmental legislation. The co-legislators reached a provisional agreement on the proposed ecodesign regulation. This initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle, replacing the 2009 directive and extending the scope to the various goods placed on the EU market.

Focus on Sustainability and Preventing Obsolescence: the regulation provides for rules against premature product obsolescence, promoting durability and efficiency. Priority products will include textiles, furniture, tyres and others, while motor vehicles are excluded.

Introduction of the Digital Product Passport: a significant new feature is the “Digital Product Passport”, which will give consumers clear data on the sustainability of products.

Ban on Destroying Unsold Textiles: in response to growing environmental problems, textile companies will be required to disclose the destruction of unsold goods, with a specific ban that will apply two years after the law enters into force.

Next Steps: the agreement still has to be formally approved by the Council and Parliament before it takes effect.

Our Commitment to the Environment: this legislative development is a significant step towards greater environmental responsibility and sustainability in production processes.
